There’s a certain beauty to winter (barely) – the crisp air, the way snow blankets the landscape, the cozy feeling of being indoors. But as we reach our 50s, winter can bring a whole new set of challenges, especially when it comes to our bodies. For me, it’s a constant reminder of how the years can impact our physical well-being, particularly when the temperature plummets.

The cold isn’t just a minor discomfort anymore. It’s a persistent ache, a constant reminder of the pain in my joints. Each step feels like a negotiation with stiffness, and the cold wind seems to burrow deep, amplifying the discomfort. My skin, too, suffers. The dry air strips away moisture, leaving my entire face feeling tight and prone to cracking. It’s a daily battle to keep up with the dryness.
And then there’s the added bonus of the Wintertime food\snack gluttony. All the weight I so proudly lost during Late Spring, through Autumn? Why, I gained it all right back and then some! Cool.
Finally, there’s the ice and snow. What might seem like a picturesque winter wonderland can quickly become a minefield. The slick surfaces present a constant fall hazard, requiring extra caution and a heightened awareness. It’s a humbling experience, realizing how easily a simple walk can turn into a painful tumble accompanied by the almost guaranteed week long back pain.
