We took a trip down to Maryland to see the missus’ oldest daugher for the weekend. While there, we all took a tour of the Nemours Estate located in Wilmington, Delaware. What an experience it was to tour this magnificant place!
Created by Alfred I. duPont for his second wife, Alicia, this magnificent mansion, designed by architects Carrère and Hastings, spans an impressive 47,000 square feet and boasts a grand total of 77 rooms. Remarkably, it still houses the original, pristine Rolls-Royce and Cadillac automobiles, complete with a fully decked-out chauffer’s garage on the property.
Shown below is just a glimpse of what we had the pleasure of seeing. The prominent desk is located in Mr. duPont’s office. Note the machine room equipped with electric generator(s). The lower floor also houses a two-lane bowling alley, with duck pins on the left lane and standard 10-pins on the right lane. Many of the mansion’s ceilings are adorned with exquisite 24k gold leaf. The library room’s bookcases were particularly captivating, showcasing intricate details that are simply unattainable today.
