If you’ve driven down a country road or passed a wild roadside patch in mid-summer, you’ve definitely met the Orange Day-lily (Hemerocallis fulva).
Brilliant, bold, and fiercely independent, these fiery blossoms are a staple of the summer landscape. Often called the “Ditch Lily,” this hardy plant is a gorgeous mix of historical traveler and ultimate survivor.

The name Hemerocallis comes from the Greek words for “day” and “beauty.” It’s a literal description: each individual flower opens at dawn and withers by twilight. However, a single plant produces dozens of buds. As one bloom bows out, another steps up the next morning, keeping the patch in continuous, glorious bloom for weeks.
Originally brought to North America from Asia by early settlers, the orange day-lily quickly hopped the garden fence. Thanks to its incredibly tough root system, it easily shrugs off poor soil, road salt, intense heat, and drought—frequently popping up in ditches and open fields.
Note for Pet Parents: While day-lily blossoms are edible for humans, they are highly toxic to cats. Keep them far away from feline friends!
Such a gorgeous flower!
